Six More Weeks of Winter? Energy Saving Tips for Your Home

Although Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring, this Groundhogs Day, Sir Walter Wally’s shadow called for six more weeks of winter in the Triangle. Either way, winter is still here and there are a few measures that can help you save money on heating costs while preparing for the coming spring. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as winter hangs around.

Insulate Attics, Windows, and Doors

Insulating is very important in the winter to keep the cold out and heat in, but it is equally important as you move into the warmer months. In the summer, insulation keeps your cool air in, keeping your home comfortable in the heat. The roof of a building is the number one source of heat loss in the winter, so be sure to double-check the insulation between the roof and ceiling. Seal weatherproof doors and windows to eliminate drafts and keep your home comfortable.

Maintenance

Maintain your HVAC equipment. Make sure your heating system is cleaned and any necessary repairs are done by qualified, licensed professionals, like our staff here at Air System Services. As with most things, being proactive about repairs can save money in the long run and can help avoid major repairs and replacements in the future. Schedule an air conditioning maintenance appointment before the temperatures rise to make sure it is working order before switching to AC.

Protect Your Pipes

February is a cruel month, and nightly temperatures are still hovering below freezing. Be sure to check the insulation around outdoor pipes and utility meters to be sure they aren’t freezing. Water pipes, typically found in the basement or crawlspace, can freeze, damaging the pipes and causing them to leak for days or even weeks before you might discover them. This, of course, may lead to even bigger problems like mold infestations or structural water damage. An easy preventive measure is to double-check the insulation and leave pipes dripping overnight to prevent freezing.

Spring Cleaning

Avoid potential damages by clearing off accumulated snow from rooftops and other structures. Snow gets heavy and can cause some serious damage, especially to flat roofs. Be sure gutters and downspouts are clear of debris so that when the snow begins to melt, it does so without causing even more problems. As spring gets closer, consider outdoor maintenance for your air conditioning, including trimming shrubs and bushes around your ac unit, clearing off brush and dirt from inside the AC grille, and replacing your air conditioning filter.
